In his inaugural exhibition of fine art photography, A Dancer's View, Andre Uspenski combines a photographer’s eye with a dancer’s understanding of movement to explore light and shadow through the dynamics of the human form. His work will be on show between 28th April - 16th May, Shop 8, Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QR
Andre Uspenski is a former First Artist of The Royal Ballet. He was born in St Petersburg and trained at the Vaganova Ballet Academy, the Palucca School, Dresden, and the Berlin State Ballet School. He graduated into Royal Danish Ballet in 1999, joining The Royal Ballet in 2002 and retiring as a dancer in 2015 due to injury.
During his dancing career, he often photographed dancers and rehearsals and after retirement was asked to become an in-house photographer for the Royal Ballet while developing a career as a globally sought-after photographer and videographer, working with principals, premier dance companies, and renown choreographers worldwide.
The subjects of this exhibition - from Steven McRae, Thiago Soares, and Iana Salenko through first soloists, soloists, and first artists - are his friends and colleagues from the Royal Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet, Mariinski Ballet, and Berlin State Ballet among others. All are at ease in front of Uspenski’s camera, allowing for a rare freedom of movement and expression.
Andre Uspenski has published the photography books Dancers: Behind the Scenes with The Royal Ballet (2013), Natalia Osipova: Becoming a Swan (2013) and Steven McRae: Dancer in the Fast Lane (2014).
